Current and recent research projects

The projects given below are also listed according to the different research groups under whose auspices they are being conducted. See the groups under Research overview

Open energy database

The aim of this project is to provide a more current, consistent and comprehensive data set for more direct input into commonly-used energy system analysis tools.

The transport sector demand for liquid fuels

This project aims to disaggregate the demand for transport based liquid fuels in South Africa.

Further information on this project

Awareness and behavioural energy tools

This project will develop tools to enhance understanding of energy-use behaviour and to build awareness of energy and energy efficiency in the residential sector.

Mitigation action plans and scenarios

This is a collaborative project aimed at assisting selected Latin american countries develop mitigation action plans and scenarios.

Further information on this project

Long-term mitigation scenarios update

This project aims at improving and updating the SA government supported Long Term Mitigation Scenarios Project.

Further information on this project

Techno-economic analysis of carbon capture and storage in Southern Africa

The project aims to assess the costs of various opportunities for carbon capture and storage (for emissions from electricity generation) in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique.

Further information on this project

• Monitoring of SouthSouthNorth CDM projects in South Africa

Evaluating whether the project design process as laid out in the SSN Project Proposal has been duly implemented

Quantifying sustainable development policies and measures (SD-PAMs) in national and international models

This projects aims to link national energy models with international models considering the allocation of emissions allowances. We propose to develop a methodology to create such a linkage using South Africa as a test case to link a bottom up SD-PAMs analysis for South Africa with the MNP/FAIR and Ecofys/ EVOC models. This methodology is to be developed through a collaborative process between analysts from ERC, MNP and Ecofys.

Long term mitigation scenario planning

South Africa has the opportunity to proactively define approaches and development paths that we – as a society – consider desirable. At the same time, there is a huge opportunity for international investment in climate-friendly technology.  In other words, we need to work out a range of paths which work for the country.

Further information on this project

• Low carbon society: Global warming statistics for South Africa

This project provides a South African input to the Japan-UK initiative in developing visions for a low-carbon society through sustainable development.

Further information on this project

Greenhouse gas information management project

The project's two main areas of work are preparing the South African national GHG inventory as an input to the second national Communication to the UNFCCC, and establishing a database and institutionalising a system for data collection on an ongoing basis.

C3D – Strengthening human and institutional capacity in developing countries for policy analysis and effective negotiation on climate change

This project, conducted together with partner organisations in Senegal and Sri Lanka, aims to support the building-up of capacities in developing countries, not only to better integrate into the international process, including the forthcoming negotiations, but also to train relevant negotiators and decision makers.

Further information on this project

• Energy security and energy efficiency

Study will focus on  the impact of especially energy insecurity on the household sector

Further information on this project

Urban and peri-urban energy access

An assessment of the household energy situation in the rapidly growing urban and peri-urban areas of South Africa and to identify viable and proven policy options that can assist in providing clean, affordable and more sustainable energy services

Further information on this project

• Gender research in Africa

Investigates the triangular relationship between gender, energy and information and communication technologies, in order to understand how their unequal use as resources, may undermine development efforts

Further information on this project

Alleviation of poverty through the provision of local energy services

Project aims to find sustainable mechanisms for the effective delivery of improved local energy services to poor communities in South Africa

Further information on this project

Create acceptance

The project investigates cultural influences on renewable energy acceptance and tools for the development of communication strategies to promote acceptance among key actor groups

Further information on this project

Income generation through productive uses of energy

The comparative study investigates SMEs and the impact of energy and complementary services (such as business development training and access to finance) on economic growth and poverty reduction in South Africa, Uganda, Ghana and Nigeria

Further information on this project

• Renewable energies for Africa

A study on renewable energies in Southern Africa including relevant case studies of initiatives that have been successfully implemented as well as those that have not been successfully implemented to provide lessons for future initiatives

Further information on this project

Development of a holistic energy model

Socio-economic data and load profiles from the National Load Research Database are combined to allow the study of determinants of energy demand in two rural villages in South Africa.

Securing the energy future of South Africa through modelling
This project explores, through a scenario-based approach, future energy demand and the resultant environmental implications
Further information on this project

Biomass energy in rural areas in southern Africa
This is a collaborative project in which the ERC is one of five project partners. The project aims to develop existing rural energy-economic system models in order to capture user preferences and changing biomass resources.

Further information on this project

Measuring the rebound effect of energy efficiency initiatives
An analysis of the human behavioural response to large-scale energy efficiency and DSM strategies in the residential sector. Specifically, determining consumers' usage patterns when prices for an energy service change, looking at differences across income groups and at factors which affect the behaviour.
