Admission requirements

For details on admission requirements for both Masters and Doctoral candidates, please see the Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment Postgraduate Handbook

As the number of students on the programme is limited, applying for a Masters programme at ERC is a highly competitive process. A selection panel will evaluate all applications individually; candidates are accepted on the basis of their academic achievements.

To be considered by the Selection Committee, applicants must at the minimum

  • hold any four-year Bachelor's or Honours degree with a minimum average of 65% in the final year. Furthermore, applicants for the MSc (Eng) must hold a BSc(Eng) degree in engineering or geomatics, or an appropriate BSc (Hons) degree.
  • Applicants for the MPhil must hold at least an Honours degree.
  • or hold any three year degree with a minimum average 65% pass mark and at least five years relevant work experience.

International students must hold a degree and average pass mark comparable to the above. Students should note that the degrees offered by international institutions may not be considered equivalent to a South African four-year Bachelor's or Honours degree. In those cases, students will not be accepted into the programme unless they complete an extra 144 credits before starting the Masters programme.

If you meet the basic entrance requirements described above, you will also have to submit the following:

Coursework Masters applicants:

  • a 100 word research statement (non-binding for future research) and
  • a 500 word letter on your motivation for studying in the field of sustainable energy and what you might bring to the interdisciplinary master class at the ERC;
  • a previous university marked written assignment or a published article or report (both for dissertation only and coursework masters)

For Dissertation only applicants:

  • a previous university marked written assignment or a published article or report (both for dissertation only and coursework masters)

Research proposals/statements, motivation letters and marked assignments must be sent directly to the ERC postgraduate administrator Ms Fazlin Harribi on fazlin.harribi@uct.ac.za with the subject line stating "Research proposal/statement and motivation letter in support of study application of Name&Surname".
