Measurement and verification services to Eskom DSM programme

The contract is for the provision of measurement and verification (M&V) services to the Eskom DSM programme. This service is performed in accordance with the SANS50010 standard for M&V.
The scope of work includes drawing up scoping reports and an M&V plan for each DSM project. A Baseline is then generated using data obtained and verified through physical site visits. On completion of the project works, a post implementation report is drawn up and the process of analysing and reporting savings commences through one or more performance assessment after which the project performance is tracked for a period of five years.
The reports produced in the process are confidential and so there is very little research output. However, the insights gained into DSM provide many opportunities for proposing additional research work to Eskom and other funders
Energy footprint and energy savings potential study for heavy industry in South Africa

This project, initiated by the Department of Energy, will focus on the four heavy industry sectors in South Africa with the highest energy intensities. These are: iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, non-metallic minerals, and chemicals.
The study consists of three main sub-studies:
- An energy footprint study reporting on the energy flow and usage of a facility, enabling the evaluation of various energy consumption reduction interventions.
- An energy savings potential study reporting on the energy savings potential within a particular industry, outlining the analysis of current installed capacity of energy consuming technologies against best available technology internationally.
- Development of technology improvement cost curves indicating cost of saving one unit of energy due to either retrofitting or replacing existing technology.
The study will determine future targets from 2015 to 2030 which will be in line with the national development plan and the national climate change response white paper and will include clear implementation plan guidelines within each of the key sectors of heavy industry.
This project (which includes the involvement of members of other groups within ERC) is being undertaken in collaboration with Aveng EPC engineering consultants who are the project lead.
Energy efficiency initiatives in Africa and action plans to support countries

An investigation of energy efficiency initiatives in Africa and development of action plans to support new and existing opportunities. The scope of work is as follows:
- Identify successful Energy Efficiency initiatives that have either already taken place, are currently underway or are being planned.
- Document the barriers encountered or anticipated in the above initiatives.
- Prioritise the countries in the region based on the energy efficiency initiatives, and applicable co-benefits such as access to energy, improvement of health and safety, education etc.
- Identify five countries to be targeted for support based on energy efficiency potential, government interest and support, commitment to accelerate energy efficiency, need for assistance. This will include face to face consultations with in country stakeholders and experts.
- In consultation with stakeholders, develop an action plan to support the identification of new initiatives or the ramping up of existing energy efficiency programmes.
