You cannot change what you cannot measure; and you cannot measure what you do not know. Gathering accurate data and publishing reliable results has always been a key component of quality research. By making research outcomes and data sources publicly available, the open data movement presents a vital step towards building a community of energy researchers while fostering an informed and engaged public.
Wiebke’s current mission is to build an Open Energy Database for South Africa to present the work of the ERC and other institutions operating in the energy space in a manner that encourages both data producers and data consumers to share and engage with available information. Good searchability, intuitive and user-friendly design are essential to ensure that researchers, decision makers and non-expert users alike are able to engage with and make informed decisions based on research data.
Other interests and focus areas
Outside the ERC Wiebke is the co-founder and CEO of Engineers Without Borders South Africa. She is passionate about promoting the role that young engineers play in the development of Africa and has a long term interest in engineering education. She believes that big data and artificial intelligence are the next wave for the engineering sector.
Previous work experience
Prior to coming to the ERC, Wiebke worked in engineering consulting where she helped start up an energy efficiency group in her company and was part of an intrapreneurial team developing a decision support tool for operational performance improvement.
