Graduates of the ERC’s Masters programme are found in a broad range of positions across the private sector, government, and civil society.  Students have gone on to find employment in sectors as diverse as renewable energy project development, wind technology companies, academic research, finance, consulting, and  NGO project management. Below you will find a few examples of how the ERC programme assisted students in finding their positions in the energy sector.

David Kitley

Dave Kitley

Senior Energy Consultant at Letsema Consulting and Advisory

Letsema Consulting advises Thermal and Renewable Energy Businesses across a number of services, from physical asset operational optimization, through organisational re-design and improvement. Furthermore, as a business we have assisted Government and SOEs with designing their procurement vision of leveraging its commodity forecast and new build plan as a development vehicle for enriching supplier development, developing industry and increasing overall local content contributions where possible. My Masters qualification has been fundamental in providing me with the education and analytical skills required to specialise as an energy advisor and practitioner, and as a respected peer in the community of energy players in South Africa. It was the stepping stone I required to obtain the critical training needed to enter the energy industry.

Simisha Pather-Elias

Senior Project Co-ordinator at Sustainable Energy Africa

In 2009 I embarked on a Master’s degree in Energy and Development Studies at the Energy Research Centre. The course was comprehensive and I found it provided an excellent foundation for anyone with a limited energy background. I especially enjoyed hands on experience which provided good exposure and practical experience. I would definitely recommend it.

Sustainable Energy Africa promotes the more efficient use of conventional energy, the transition to more sustainable energies such as solar and wind power, access to safe and affordable energy for all, and a holistic view of sustainable development

Manager at African Clean Energy Developments

Studying a Masters in  Energy and Development Studies at the Energy Research Centre enabled me to gain an excellent understanding of the regulatory environment and market players in the renewable energy sector in South Africa. The people and resources available at ERC assisted me in making valuable contacts in both the private and public sectors in the renewable energy industry, which led me to a career in development and project finance of renewable energy projects in South Africa. Since completing my degree at the ERC in 2009 – 2010, I joined African Clean Energy Developments (ACED), a South African renewable energy project developer. ACED achieved financial close of the biggest wind farm in South Africa under the first round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme in December 2012, the Cookhouse Wind Farm (138.6MW). The Cookhouse Wind Farm, located in the Eastern Cape province, is currently under construction and is scheduled to be fully operational by mid-2014.

For me, one of the most valuable aspects of the ERC Masters programme, was the access and exposure to experts in the energy and climate change field – not just within South Africa, but also the international connections that the ERC has. The combination of coursework and independent research   worked well. The coursework provides the opportunity to build a broad foundation of knowledge – from energy policy, climate change & energy poverty to energy efficiency & energy modeling. The independent thesis research then allows you to drill down into a particular area of interest and  develop networks and knowledge in a specific field.Having been working in the private sector prior to  this course, it was a refreshing experience to be in an academic environment that collaborates with  government, NGO's & private sector – both national & international.
