Coal Transition in South Africa Seminar

4 Sep 2018 - 15:15

South Africa is highly coal and energy intensive, and has an economy characterized by extremely high level of inequality and poverty. In the long run, sustainable growth and development in South Africa will depend on the transition away from a coal-intensive energy system and economy. This seminar will discuss the challenges already facing the coal sector and highlight the risks of a development strategy that continues to rely on coal for energy security, employment and growth.  The study assessed the energy system implications of South Africa meeting its long-term climate goals, and what this means for the coal sector in terms of production, employment, coal plants and mines.

Coal Transitions is an international research project that has developed credible and feasible  trajectories and policy guidance for deep transitions in the coal sector in six major coal using countries:  China, India, Australia, South Africa, Germany and  Poland.
